Alberta Opportunity Stream and Rural Renewal Stream nominee applicants may qualify for a letter of support, allowing them to apply for a 2-year open work permit from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
This eligibility comes under the “Temporary Public Policy to Facilitate Work Permits for Prospective Provincial Nominee Program Candidates,” signed with the Federal government. The policy applies to those who were awaiting a decision on their application as of August 26, 2024, and held a valid work permit expiring between May 7 and December 31, 2024, at the time of application. It also covers applicants whose applications were declined between May 7 and August 26, 2024, solely due to their work permit expiration.
Participation in this initiative is not open for application. Instead, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) will conduct an initial assessment to identify eligible candidates. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate they are likely to meet the minimum requirements for their stream and possess a valid Alberta job offer. Those whose work permits have expired must also show they have maintained their status during processing or are eligible for restoration of temporary resident status.
Eligible applicants will be contacted directly by AAIP based on the work permit expiry date declared at the time of application. Recipients of the support letter can apply for a 2-year open work permit, enabling them to continue working and maintain their nomination eligibility. Final eligibility assessments will not occur until 2025.
This policy also allows AAIP to prioritize final decisions on applications from individuals with work permits that expired between January 1, 2024, and May 6, 2024, and those with permits expiring in early 2025. These applications will be prioritized throughout the remainder of 2024, within the available allocation spaces.
