How to Apply for a PR Card in Canada
A Permanent Resident (PR) Card is an essential document for permanent residents of Canada. It serves as proof of your status and is required when traveling back to Canada by air, land, or sea. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for a PR card, whether it’s your first card or a renewal.
Who Needs a PR Card?
New permanent residents automatically receive their first PR card after arriving in Canada and completing the immigration process.
Existing permanent residents need to apply for a new card if :
o Their current PR card is expired or about to expire.
o Their PR card is lost, stolen, or damaged.
o They legally changed their name or require a replacement.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a PR card, you must :
- 1. Be a permanent resident of Canada.
- 2. Be physically present in Canada when you apply.
- 3. Have met your residency obligations (e.g., 730 days in Canada within the last five years).
- 4. Not be under a removal order.
- 5. Not be a Canadian citizen.
Steps to Apply for a PR Card
1. Gather Required Documents
Prepare the following documents to include with your application:
- A copy of your valid passport or travel document.
- A copy of your Record of Landing (IMM 1000), Confirmation of Permanent
Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688), or other proof of PR status. - Two recent photos that meet the PR card photo specifications.
- A copy of any government-issued ID with your photo and signature (e.g.,
driver’s license). - Proof of name change (if applicable).

Processing Times
The processing time for a PR card application varies.

Urgent Processing
- Proof of travel, such as a ticket or itinerary.
- A detailed explanation of why you need urgent processing.
What Happens After You Apply?
- You will receive an acknowledgment of receipt from IRCC.
- If your application is approved, your PR card will be mailed to you. In some cases, you may need to collect it in person.
Renewing or Replacing a PR Card
Renewal : Apply at least six months before your current card expires.
Replacement : If your PR card is lost, stolen, or damaged, report it immediately to IRCC and apply for a replacement.
Traveling Without a PR Card
If you are outside Canada and do not have a valid PR card, you must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada.
Residency Obligation
To maintain your permanent resident status, you must :
- Be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within the last five years.
- Time spent abroad with a Canadian citizen spouse or while working for a Canadian business may count toward this requirement.
