The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a widely recognised English proficiency exam. It is designed for non-native speakers to evaluate their mastery of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Those who wish to demonstrate their English proficiency for immigration, educational, or professional purposes can take the test, although eligibility requirements may differ.
The test can be taken at authorised centres worldwide, and the Pearson website can be visited to find a nearby location. The PTE score ranges from 10 to 90, with higher scores indicating a higher level of English proficiency. The scoring system assesses all four language abilities using multiple-choice questions and tasks.
The PTE Essential has also been approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for economic-class immigration candidates, increasing the pool of recognised language tests.
Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, has been chosen by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to introduce its latest language assessment, PTE Core (formerly known as PTE Essential), as proof of English language proficiency.
PTE Core is an updated version of the Pearson Test of English, closely resembling PTE Academic. The key distinction lies in its emphasis on practical, real-world skills rather than academic knowledge, aligning with IRCC’s language proficiency criteria.
It is expected that starting late 2023, individuals seeking Canadian permanent residency or citizenship will be able to utilise PTE Core as evidence of their English language proficiency.
UK, Australian, and New Zealand governments recognise PTE Academic for all visa applications. PTE Academic is also accepted by 100 per cent of Australian, New Zealand, and Irish universities, 99 per cent of UK universities, and over 90 per cent of universities in Canada.
In a recent announcement, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) revealed its ambitious plan to welcome a record-breaking number of permanent residents over the next three years, totalling approximately 1.45 million individuals.
This surge in demand for skilled professionals in sectors like nursing, engineering, and web development makes the approval of PTE Core by IRCC a timely development, presenting new opportunities for Pearson and test takers alike.
PTE Core, delivered through Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing division of Pearson, is a fully digital examination. It utilises state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) technology for scoring, ensuring an impartial and highly accurate assessment of individuals’ English language proficiency.
The test incorporates advanced security measures, including collecting biometric data and using voice recognition software for the speaking component.
One of the significant advantages for test takers is the convenience offered by PTE Core. They can book their tests online 24 hours in advance, enjoy year-round availability of test centre slots worldwide, and receive their results, on average, within 1.3 days.
PTE Core will be gradually implemented across Pearson’s extensive network, encompassing over 400 PTE centres spanning 118 countries.
Pearson Canada Inc. has rebranded its English language test as PTE Core. It is expected that starting in late 2023, these tests will be recognised and accepted by IRCC.
